The “Foolishness” We Dream
Adriana Tanese-Nogueira
Imagine that an unknown individual comes to talk to you. Weird sounds are produces by his moths and you get to think what is it is that he is trying to say to you. The individual is dressed in a strange way you have never seen before. You are not feeling like making new contacts now and this one demands too much effort. You have other things in your mind and are not willing to think more than what you already need. And you start to feel impatient.
You look at the stranger and wonder how to get rid of him, when suddenly you believe you have recognized one or two words. You have the impression that some of his sounds resemble your daily vocabulary, banal words actually, of no great importance. You feel relieved, already preparing yourself to move one and deal with what really matters. You conclude is that the individual is saying foolishness, irrelevant talk. Finally, you can go to take care of your business.

Rachitic Bougainvilleas and Children Who Don’t Blossom
I had a beautiful bougainvillea. I bought it all in flower, as a matter of fact, I bought two of them, one with intense pink flowers and the other with white ones. They started to climb on the railing of my porch, it was beautiful to see, but they didn’t get to cover it entirely, as I wished. After a while, the flowers fell, the leaves remained and then they also started to show signs of tiredness. Soon I realized that the plants needed more soil, and I transplanted the two of them into a large pot. And the flowering started again. It lasted a few months and then as before the flowers fell and the plant looked balder than ever. I bought vitamins and salts, they helped. But didn’t solve the problem, until they didn’t even help anymore. It was clear that the plant needed more earth. A lot of it. The problem wasn’t its, I was sure it had health and strength to grow strong and beautiful. The problem was the lack of resources. Lack of ground, of basis and the nutrients coming directly from Mother Earth not from industrialized package ready to use. Read the rest of this entry »
Better teacher training in developing countries is the key for progress?
If we look at the *reality* of developing countries, of course a better teacher training is not a key for progress. Unfortunately, although teachers are one of the most important figures in a nation life as well as in children’s, after the parents, and education is also essential for the development of children personality, who are the citizens of tomorrow. And what about the parents? Shouldn’t they receive a better training as well? How many teachers struggle to get better results with their students but hit against the barrier of a disturbed family?
Financial and commercial institutions should also have a core part in helping education to improve a country’s progress for which values can a teacher promote that are actually found out in the job market or in the “money’s world”?
Finally, a teacher training should have a clear idea of what kind of people we want to form. Education cannot only be about methodology and didactics, besides the knowledge itself. Not in the world we live in. Who are the teachers and what do we want from them? In the reality where children spend most of their time far from their parents, schools replace homes. This is not good, but it’s what’s happening.
Relationship skills, emotional intelligence, civic values, ethics, courage, originality and independence are as much important in a teacher training as technical abilities. Honesty, creativity and empathy should be a second skin for teacher. To that I would add a good salary, which is a problem in developed and in developing countries.
Sadly, I haven’t seen much of any of these quality lastly. Therefore, a training that stresses the same old tools just in an updates version will not be in any way a key for the progress of any country. Only a global shift to a new paradigm about society, relationship and human life can include in its changing a teacher training that is actually a key for progress. But we are still far from that.
